Description
Once Upon a Time in Almería depicts the province of Almería, in the far southeastern corner of Spain, at one time the self-proclaimed “The Movie Capital of the World.” During the 1960s and 1970s, the region of Almeria, Spain, was host to dozens of filmmakers who constructed elaborate movie sets, invoking locations from the American Southwest to Bedouin Arabia. International stars―Brigitte Bardot, Richard Burton, Peter O’Toole, Clint Eastwood, and many others―passed through the barren landscape. Yet the photographs take the stance that the aura of Hollywood glamour was mostly fiction. Photographer Mark Parascandola, who has family roots in Almería, had an early fascination with the remains of these old movie towns in the desert. Foreword by Alex Cox, British film director, screenwriter, and nonfiction author, who shot multiple films in Almería.
